Series Description: This series includes blueprints, site drawings, photographs taken before and after the 1957 fire, and reports by individuals about their experiences and actions during the fire. The series also contains a copy of a report titled Report of Investigation of Serious Incident in Building 71 on September 11, 1957. The classified report quantifies the amount of plutonium in grams but otherwise adds little to the declassified version. A Supplemental Report of December 10, 1957 indicates lessons learned, a re-estimate of the damage and cleanup costs, proposals to use types of machinery less susceptible to fire, and changes in fire department regulations. The new regulations include a policy change on type of agents to be used in fighting plutonium fires.
