Plutonium Button Shipment Reports, 1981-1982Location: Active:
Arrangement: Chronological within the binders Originating Office: Nuclear Materials Control and Accountability Organization, Rockwell International Finding Aids: Records Storage Receipt
Series Description: The reports in this series relate to the shipment of plutonium buttons, also referred to in these records as Savannah Buttons. The buttons appear to have been shipped from Rocky Flats to the Savannah River Plant. Several forms were generated for each shipment of buttons. One type lists the "OBS" number, button identification number, "ELE-LE," and the limit of error for each isotope. Savannah Button reports list the button number, shipping container number, percentage of plutonium content, sealed can and button weights, and plutonium weight per button in grams. Shipper-Receiver Difference Report Summary forms compare the gross weight of the plutonium metals and oxides received versus the weights measured prior to shipment. Button and shipping container numbers and weights are provided in NMC [Nuclear Materials Control] Button Listing reports, and Unalloyed Plutonium Data Sheets provide the results of chemical analyses performed on each button. The sheets list button and shipping container numbers, shipping container radiation levels, sealed can weights in grams, radiation levels in millirems per hour (mrem/hr), button weights in grams, percentage weights of plutonium isotopes, parts per million (ppm) measurements of several other metals present, impurity and stability factors, and percentages of plutonium content. Other data sheets delineate amounts of plutonium isotopes, americium, all metals, and curies emitted by each metal. This series appears to be backup data for Nuclear Materials Transaction Reports (DOE/NRC Form 741). For related records, see Volume IV.
