Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) Correspondence and Notes, 1975-1978Location: Active:
Originating Office: Technical Information Organization, Rockwell International Finding Aids: NARA Standard Form 135
Series Description: The Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) Correspondence and Notes contain information related to the final version of the Rocky Flats EIS, dated 1980. Several documents are relevant to the 1957 fire. Box 743950 includes a file titled EIS Backup Material containing photocopies of correspondence and notes regarding fires at Rocky Flats. Documents discussing a fire in Building 71, on September 30, 1955, provide contamination measurements. A letter relating to the 1955 fire includes names of contaminated personnel and their man [employee] numbers. Also included are nose swipe results and air and duct sample results (including the period September 30 to October 3, 1955). Of particular interest are nine pages of handwritten notes which contain measurements, possibly air, taken in 1957 before and after the fire. Also, the notes include information related to a June 1957 incident in the same building. Differentiation is made between normal and accidental releases for 1957. Measurements for the month of September are broken down into data collected before and after September 11.
A photocopy of a wind gauge graph indicates wind direction and velocity on September 11. A graph of monthly average plutonium concentrations in disintegrations per minute per cubic meter from the main exhaust duct in Building 71 from 1953 to 1963 gives specifics for September 11, 1957. Building 771 stack effluent measurements are given by month for 1957. A handwritten statement indicates that the Draft 1975 Environmental Impact Statement is no longer valid.
