Series Description: This series contains materials related to the Mason and Hanger Wellness Study. Mason and Hanger was the security contractor for Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL). The LANL Wellness Center set up a fitness program to prepare the Mason and Hanger guards to meet DOE fitness standards. The Epidemiology Section at LANL examined the impact of the fitness program on the guards and the effects on the study subjects' weight, performance, biochemical parameters, and immune system.

This series consists of four main subseries. Subseries one consists of data used to prepare the Wellness Study databases. It includes information on participants' injuries, study members enrolled in a weight-loss clinic, and employees scheduled for stress tests; study participant and date-of-hire lists; a list of persons who completed qualifications testing; a >Mason and Hanger employee roster; and copies of health and fitness progress tests. The second subseries consists of materials related to database software and includes coding instructions, record definitions, and editing information. The third subseries consists of three computer-generated reports of study results, statistical analyses (generated with software from BMDP Statistical Software, Inc.), and conclusions. These three reports provide information concerning participants' names, Z and social security numbers, study numbers, fitness status, smoking habits, and physical characteristics. The fourth subseries consists of a statement of study procedures and goals, sample forms, working notes, reference materials that outline body fat and exercise norms, monthly reports, memoranda, and a final report, dated May 1986 and titled Physical Fitness Training Program for Security Inspectors, Los Alamos National Laboratory.
